Storj, Filecoin, and Siacoin are the big 3 decentralized storage players right now in the cryptocurrency world. Each of these cryptocurrencies acts as the native token for a decentralized storage network. This means that if you want to store files one of these networks, storage transactions will likely take place using one of these cryptocurrencies. You may have heard of these. Some of you may own some of these cryptocurrencies. But, have you ever tried to use any of these decentralized storage solutions for actually storing data?
Right now Storj is offering 50 free gigabytes of encrypted storage to anyone who wants to create an account.
If you want to store files on the Storj network, Storj DCS (formerly called Tardigrade) is how you will access the network. Storj DCS is the user-facing side of the Storj network. This is primarily targeted towards enterprise users and developers that need large amounts of storage. If you are not a developer you might find yourself to be a bit lonely in this community, and a lot of this platform’s features will not concern you. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use this for storing some of your photo or video archives!
How do you store files on the Storj network?
You can start your journey at storj.io and sign up for an account.
Storj has several different options for interacting with the storage network. The easiest way to do this is through your web browser and if you are not a developer this is likely your best option. You don’t need to know anything about gateways and CLIs. You can just follow the directions below and navigate to the drag & drop browser interface.
After creating and confirming your account, select “Upload in Browser” from the project screen that is seen below.
How To Upload Files?
Think of the project dashboard as a system of folders and files just like you might find in a Google drive browser window. All of your files are stored within the objects folder. You will need to create additional folders inside of here to store your files and these are called buckets.
Buckets are essentially just like a storage folder. Here you can drag and drop your files, automatically encrypt them, and upload them onto the Storj network easily.
First Create Your Objects Folder and Encryption Phrase
When you create your objects folder for first time you will be given an encryption phrase. This can only be generated once and this is the key to accessing your data. Write it down and back it up. Do not write it anywhere within your computer or phone if you need to really be secure. Write it on paper and store this offline in a secure place. Once you have done this, move onto the next step.
Next, Create a Bucket
You can think of your bucket just like another folder and this is where you will store your files. You can drag and drop them right in your browser. Files are encrypted automatically from here and stored on the Storj network.
How Much Does Decentralized Storage with Storj Usually Cost?
You can expect prices to change over time but Storj provides a cost calculator & cost comparison right on the website. If you want to store 100 TB of data you will pay $1,046/month today. This will save you more than $10,000 per year by switching to decentralized storage.
